Background of Birampur Upazila

    Birampur is situated 56km south from the Dinajpur district headquarter on the bank of the branch of jamuna river. Birampur Upazila is bounded by Fulbari and Nawabgonj Upazilas on the north, Nawabganj and Hakimpur Upazilas on the east. Birampur was subsequently created by following a long road in the evolution of time. It is said that at the time of Emperor Akbar there was an strong king named Pator Das among Barovuiya.A battel was occured between Moghal forces and Patordas.In battle, Patradas defeated by Mughal commander, Vairam Khan.Then Vairam Khan occupied the fort of Patradas and established a settlement. It is reported that the name of the area was named after the commander of the army, Biram Khan.

Birampur Upazila was formed on June 9, with the combination of 2 unions of Nawabganj and Hakimpur thana and 5 unions of Phulbari thana. Later, on 6 September, Birampur police station was upgraded to "Upazila".Birampur police station was established with three unions including Mukundpur, Katla, Khanpur, Diodar, Binail, Jotbani, Poliprayagpur. Later, after upgrading the police station to Upazila, Birampur thana was declared a municipality in the 8th. The functioning of the municipality of Birampur began from 7 June. At present, Birampur Municipality is operating as a first class municipality.
